Network Status/Service Outages

October 25th, 2009

Facilities Management had scheduled an interruption of service for electrical systems in the Schools of Social Ecology and Social Science. Since a portion of ResNet's cable equipment is housed in one of buildings there, the power outage resulted directly in a loss of television service for all UCI housing communities.

Initially, it was expected that both the power and the cable television signal would be restored by 2:00 PM. Unfortunately, during the maintenance of the electric system, complications arose, and Facilities Management was unable to restore power to certain circuits (including those that feed ResNet's equipment) until roughly 5:00 PM.

A power outage in Verano Place 4800 occured at approximately 12:00pm noon today, Monday May 11th. Verano Place staff were notified that afternoon. The outage affects a distribution switch servicing several other buildings. Internet access in the affected area will be resume as soon as the power in building 4800 is restored.

Update Tuesday May 12: ResNet distribution equipment in building 4800 is still without electrical power this morning. This issue is affecting buildings 4800, 4900, 5000, 5200, 5300, and 6100. Verano Place Housing reports that electricians have been called out to investigate the issue as of 9:00am.

Update 2 Tuesday May 12: Verano Place maintenance repaired the issue and internet access was restored to the aforementioned buildings as of 10:29am.

April 5th, 2009

A routingissue with the UCI Campus' service provider caused several internet sites to become unavailable. This outage began at approximately 4:00am. NACS personnel were on-site Sunday and were working with engineers from the service provider to repair the problem as of 10:30pm. A workaround solution was implemented and previously inaccessible sites should now be working.

March 7th, 2009

Communcation between the campus authentication server and the ResNet authentication server was disrupted between the hours of 12:00am and approximately 12:00pm. ResNet staff were able to correct the issue and are currently investigating the cause. Authentication services and connectivity were restored by 12:30pm today.

February 8th , 2009

Rain-related water damage caused a switch to malfunction in Rivendell, Middle Earth. Some residents were without internet access until Monday morning, when ResNet staff replaced the device with a new one. We have since taken measures to prevent this type of outage from occurring in Rivendell.

January 23, 2009

A denial of service attack between a host on the UC Irvine campus and a host on the Internet affected outside connectivity by over taxing services on our border firewall. Connectivity issues were noticed by network monitoring equipment at about 8:20 PM, and the trouble was alleviated by 9:01 PM once the location of the host was identified and disconnected from its LAN. Network connectivity between the UCI Medical Center, the UCI campus, ResNet and the National Academy of Sciences was lost due to this event.

January 19th, 2009

A loss of service began at 10:00 AM and lasted until 11:10 AM. During this outage, connectivity from the UCI Campus, UCI Medical Center, ResNet and the National Academy of Sciences to the Internet failed.

December 31st, 2008

An optical transmitter in our Cable Television system failed Tuesday, December 30th and had to be serviced this morning. The device was providing television to buildings in Palo Verde II. Service was restored as of 10:00am on Wednesday, December 31st. Happy New Year!

December 10th, 2008

DirecTV is currently experiencing a nationwide outage. Since they feed our CableTV system, the outage affects all channels on the ResNet Cable TV system.

December 9th, 2008

A faulty network switch was replaced in Verano building 6337.

November 13th, 2008

There is a problem with the fiber optic wiring in Verano Place building 6478- internet access is currently unavailable to the affected building, however we are investigating the issue.

Update- This was resolved in the evening of the 14th. Outside contractors had been working on an unrelated project and fiber optic cable servicing ResNet was damaged. It was subsequently repaired later the next day.

October 8, 2008

Since early this morning certain websites have been intermittently inaccessible to users on both ResNet and UCInet. Updated from earlier today- the cause seems to be faulty hardware in one of the locations that provides UCI's internet connection. NACS engineers are working with CENIC to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

Gabrielino Apartments

A power outage in the complex resulted in a loss of internet service between the hours of 11:00AM and 4:00PM.

October 1, 2008

Verano Place 4000 - 4600

Excessive heat led to an equipment malfunction in the early afternoon. Residents in the 4000 block of Verano Place experienced a lapse of internet service between the hours of 1:30PM and 4:30PM.

September 16, 2008 - September 25, 2008

Verano Place 200

A resident of the 200 building of Verano Place was attempting to connect to the residential network with some form of misconfigured device. This resulted in intermittent connectivity for all other residents in the building. ResNet is taking steps to further investigate the problem and devise additional preventative measures to avoid future outages.

September 8, 2008 - September 9, 2008

Verano Place 6395-6495 (roughly)

Complications arose from a configuration update made to existing network equipment. Residents may have experienced a lapse of service, and connectivity was fully restored on the morning of the 9th.

August 28, 2008

Palo Verde 1100-6300

In the late afternoon, residents on the Palo Verde I networks experienced an anomalous service outage. ResNet was able to identify and correct the problem, and service was restored by rougly 6:00PM.

August 20, 2008

A outage scheduled by Southern California Edison resulted in a loss of power to the networking equipment in place. Residents were without  internet service for the duration of the power outage.

July 14, 2008 - August 8, 2008

Verano Place 4000 - 4600

It was found that excessive heat during the early afternoon resulted in equipment malfunction, and network outages were experienced by a number of buildings in Verano Place. A temporary solution has been introduced that reduces the amount of direct sunlight on the structure that houses the networking equipment. This will remain in place until a more efficient and permanent solution can be implemented by the housing complex.
