Network Status/Outages

January 31st - February 1st, 2008

A circuit breaker tripped in Santiago apartments, building 200, on Thursday January 31st at approximately 5:30pm. This caused a power loss in the electrical closet which houses network equipment for that building. ResNet staff reset the breaker on the morning of Friday, February 1st however later in the day, the breaker tripped once again. ICHA staff has been notified of this fault. Network access will be re-established as soon as the power is restored.

November 30th - December 3rd, 2007

Network equipment in Middle Earth dormitories The Shire and Hobbiton experienced failures resulting from water exposure. ResNet staff replaced the equipment in The Shire at roughly 5PM. Hobbiton's equipment was replaced on Monday, December 3rd at 11AM as necessary repairs had not been made to the building prior.

November 26th, 2007

Network equipment serving Verano Place building 6352 failed over the holiday weekend. ResNet staff replaced the equipment this morning, Monday November 26th, at approximately 8:30am.

November 4th, 2007

Equipment serving the Palo Verde housing complex experienced a notable degradation in performance as a result of excessive workload being placed on the system. This effectively caused a network outage for all of Palo Verde. The problem was identified and corrected, and service was restored by roughly 12:00PM. We will continue to monitor the equipment to avoid further issues.

October 23rd, 2007

During evenings (approximately 7pm to 11pm) over the last two weeks, network equipment serving Verano Place has been experiencing extremely high cpu usage and network performance has been significantly affected. We have been working with Cisco to rectify this issue and continue to monitor the equipment around the clock in order to gather data which may shed light on the cause of the issue. Key components will be replaced and upgraded tomorrow, October 24th, in an attempt to circumvent the issue in the case that it is due to a specific hardware malfunction.

As of November 5th, it has been determined that the amount of traffic present at peak hours exceeds the server's capabilities. We are in the process of obtaining another server that will be installed to relieve some of the load.

September 20th, 2007

This afternoon construction at the ARC caused a power outage. The AC unit in the ARC network room failed to automatically start up when the power was restored- as a result ambient temperatures rose well above safe levels. This caused the CCA servers to crash/hang. The AC unit has been reactivated and we do not anticipate any additional downtime barring further mishaps in the construction zone.

September 12th, 2007

As of 10:15am, a backhoe cut through fiber optic conduit near the ARC. Arroyo Vista housing is without internet access until an emergency maintenance team can restore connectivity. We anticipate that the outage will last at least until the end of the day- possibly longer depending on what kind of repairs need to be done.

September 6th, 2007

At 4:50pm on Thursday, power was unexpectedly cut at the ARC. This affected all Graduate and Faculty housing complexes. Power was restored by 5:15pm. Later at approximately 10:15pm and early on Friday morning, power is expected to go down while more maintenance goes underway at the ARC.

August 31 - September 1, 2007

At approximately 12:45 PM on Friday, UCI experienced widespread power outages across the campus for roughly one hour. The lack of power led to equipment failure at the cable television distribution. As a result, buildings in Palo Verde II (7100-8800) were left without a viable cable signal. Service was restored at roughly 10:30 AM on the following day.

June 8th

Palo Verde Building 4200 lost connectivity due to a faulty fiber optic connection. Access was restored just before 8:40 am.

May 1-2

On May 1st ResNet will be splicing some fiber optic cable in order to improve Cable TV picture clarity and signal strength. The work will begin in the morning on the 1st at 8:00am in Mesa Court. Service should not be interrupted in any single location on campus for more than two hours at a time. We have scheduled downtime on Wednesday May 2nd as well, however we anticipate that maintenance will be completed on Tuesday.

April 26-27, 2007

On April 26th at 11:45pm, all outbound network traffic from UCInet stopped flowing. The traffic flow resumed at 12:45am on April 27th. NACS engineers are investigating the outage to determine its cause. This outage affected all networks within UCInet, including ResNet.

April 4, 2007

On Friday, April 6th beginning at 4:15am, the UC Irvine campus border router will have software upgrades performed to it.

The expectation is that the software upgrade will be quick.

Additional time has been reserved to address unexpected difficulties.

Connectivity between the following sites will be lost for a period of about 10 minutes as the campus border router is restarted:

UCI campus networks <--> the internet

UCIMC networks <--> the internet

ResNet networks <--> the internet

Resnet networks <--> UCI campus

The software upgrade is being performed to address security vulnerabilities recently announced by Cisco Systems and to help alleviate the causes of the outages experienced on 04/04/2007 and 02/25/2007.

April 4, 2007

This morning at about 7:15am, UCI experienced a 7 minute disconnect from the Internet. The outage was caused by a recurring problem last experienced on Sunday, February 25th at about 6:00am.

Connectivity to the Internet from UCINet, the UCIMC and ResNet was lost during this time.

Connectivity between the UCI Campus and ResNet was lost during this outage.

April 4, 2007

A hardware failure in AV caused the 1054 building to go down. ResNet replaced the hardware and the building was back online at about 9:30am.

March 26, 2007

Palo Verde 2100 and 2200 have been cut over to the new wiring. If you live in those area's and are unable to connect to the internet, insure that your computer is plugged into the orange port. If you are still unable to connect, give our help desk a call.

March 16, 2007

This morning a faulty switch module caused an outage for Verano Place building 2500. Repairs and/or replacement is underway and service should be restored within an hour of the initial downtime.

February 23 , 2007

A broken water pipe in Verano Place building 6230 caused the building switch to go down. Service will be restored as soon as the pipe is repaired and closet dries out. Estimated date for service to be restored is Monday, February 25.

January 3 , 2007

On Wednesday, January 3rd between 7:00 and 9:00am, necessary software upgrades will be performed on several key systems within ResNet. These updates are necessary to provide support for the Windows Vista Operating System through Cisco Clean Access in addition to other important updates. During this time, there will be several short outages lasting 2-5 minutes while these systems are rebooted.
