Wireless Router COnfiguration
These instructions are meant for residents of Middle Earth, Mesa Court, Arroyo Vista, Campus Village.
We have basic guides for the following brand/models:
Even if you do not have one of the aforementioned router models, you should be able to configure your router correctly by hunting through the administration/setup page and looking for the proper fields and options. The guides may be useful to give you a general idea of what to look for when configuring your router.
Use the following checklist to ensure that your computer is configured correctly for use on in Arroyo Vista, Mesa Court, Middle Earth, and Campus Village:
- Your router must have its DHCP server completely disabled.
- You should connect an ethernet cable from wall jack directly into one of the numbered jacks on the back of the router, NOT the WAN port.
- We recommend that you have some kind of encryption enabled- at least WEP, and preferably WPA or WPA2.
- We also recommend (for increased security) that you enable MAC filtering. This feature allows you to identify which wireless cards the router will "speak" to, and it can specify that your router ignore all other ethernet cards. This ensures that only computers you approve of can use your access point. You can find your MAC address by clicking Start -> Run, typing "cmd", clicking "Ok", and then typing "ipconfig /all" in the console window that pops up. Your MAC address is listed next to Physical Address. If you have more than one network adapter, such as an ethernet and wireless, you probably have more than one MAC address. Make sure to use the one for the wireless adapter.
IMPORTANT NOTE: ResNet advises against purchasing a wireless "router" and instead recommends that residents purchase a wireless "access point". They are cheaper and provide the same wireless access and security without complications such as Network Address Translation (NAT), DHCP, and Layer 3 isolation.
