Q. Where do I plug my Ethernet cable into?
A. Ethernet ports are always the bottom port(s) of your wall jack. It is normally on the same wall jack as your telephone ports.
Q. Where can I buy an Ethernet card?A. Ethernet cards can be purchased at any computer store including the UCI bookstore. Simply ask for a 10 base-T Ethernet Card.
Q. Where can I buy an Ethernet cable?A. Ethernet cables can be purchased at the UCI bookstore, Fry's Electronic, Office Depot or any computer store.
Q. Can I use phone cable for Ethernet?A. No. Ethernet requires an Ethernet cable (RJ-45) which has 8 pins, whereas a phone cable only has 4 pins. The ends of an ethernet cable look like the ends of a phone cable, only much larger.
Q. What kind of Ethernet cable do I need?A. You need what is called a patch or straight ethernet cable to connect your computer to the jack in the wall. Do not buy a crossover ethernet cable. If you are unsure which type of cable you have, call Residential Networking at 824-6375 and we can tell you.
Q. Can you guys fix my computer?A. Only if it is a network related problem. If you have a problem with your computer that are not network related, you should contact a computer technician.
Q. Can I run web or ftp servers from my computer?A. Yes. The network acceptable use policy allows servers, but you may find your bandwidth severely limited if you plan to run file servers that are high volume, peer-to-peer, movie or music servers. Q. Am I allowed to share folders on my computer?A. Yes. Sharing files within the university is permitted, however we recommend you password protect any folders you share and make them read only access.
Q. Are we allowed to have more than one computer connected to the network?A. Yes, although you must register every computer you have connected.
Q. How do I find/set my computer name or workgroup name?A. On Windows PCs right click the Network Neighborhood icon on the desktop and click properties. Now click on the identification tab in the window that opens up. The computer name and workgroup will be displayed and are able to be modified.
