Problem:
AntiVirus Software Validation Failure
Summary:
You are being re-directed to instructions on how to download and install McAfee AntiVirus
Description:
AntiVirus Software is required to be installed and running on all ResNet computers in order to gain internet access. If the Clean Access Agent fails to detect qualifying AntiVirus software you'll be prompted to install McAfee AntiVirus.
You are currently being placed in a Temporary Role with limited network access to perform the necessary updates. Depending on which updates are missing, you may be required to perform several reboots.
Q: What is AntiVirus software, and why do I need it?
A: AntiVirus software protects your computer from "viruses," "trojans," "worms," and other malicious software that may damage your computer, along with other computers on the Internet. A requirement of the UCI Residential Network Computer Use Policy is having a current and up-to-date AntiVirus program on your system. This is to protect your computer, along with the thousands of other systems on the UCI Residential Network.
Q: What can happen if my system is not protected?
A: Viruses can do a wide range of things. They can be harmless and simply pass around annoying messages, or they can be very destructive and wipe out all of your data. Most of the time when there is a problem with access to the internet, it is because of an infected PC attacking a system on the Internet, thus blocking legitimate internet access. Following this guide will help reduce the number of infected PCs and related problems.
Q: How much does AntiVirus software cost?
A: Nothing. McAfee AntiVirus is provided free of charge to all current UCI Housing Residents running Windows Operating Systems. Thus, McAfee is the only AntiVirus software supported by the ResNet Helpdesk.
Q: I'm running Symantec or TrendMicro AntiVirus, is this considered "qualifying AntiVirus" software?
A: Yes, however, ResNet can only provide support for McAfee. For other vendors the helpdesk cannot assist in resolving problems associated with network access. The best option is to uninstall any other AntiVirus application and install McAfee. Click Start>Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs. Select your current AntiVirus program from the list, and follow the instructions to remove it. This guide will tell you how to install McAfee onto your system.
