Wireless Router Configuration
IMPORTANT NOTE: ResNet advises against purchasing a wireless "router" and instead recommends that residents purchase a wireless "access point". They provide the same wireless access and security without complications such as network address translation (NAT) and DHCP.
The ResNet website offers five configuration guides that you may find helpful. While the user interface shown may not match your router’s exactly, the general concepts of security and NAT/DHCP should still apply.
Again, even if you do not have one of the aforementioned router models, you should be able to configure your router correctly by sifting through the administration/setup pages on your device and identifying the proper fields and options. The guides should be useful in giving you a general idea of what to look for when configuring your router.
Use the following checklist to ensure that your computer is configured correctly for use on the UCI Residential Network:
-
You must connect an ethernet cable from network jack on the wall directly into one of the ethernet/LAN ports on the back of the router, not the WAN port.
-
We highly recommend that you have some kind of wireless encryption enabled on your router, preferably WPA2-AES.
-
Your router must have its DHCP server completely disabled.
